File and Suspend
The File and Suspend Strategyallows Married couples with one Primary income earner the ability to maximize their benefits. Upon reaching full retirement age, the Primary income earner can apply for retirement benefits and then request to have payments suspended. This allows the home maker to claim the spousal benefit while the primary income earner continues to earn delayed retirement credits until reaching maximum benefits at age 70. At age 70 the higher income earner files to collect the full retirement benefit.
